Abby!! I am soooo proud of you. Oh to have an income so that I could give oodles more. Oh to be in Alameda on June 5th to cheer from the sidelines (my own aversion to running is surpassed only by my enthusiasm for watching other friends in road races). You'll be AWESOME. Of course, truth be told, the $15 is purely in anticipation of the blog posts. I expect a faithful recording of new highs reached, new sneakers broken in, new sun screen faithfully applied. I can hardly wait!!

Goal

I'm going to run a 5k, which is 5k more than I've ever run before. Why? Because this year is a big year holding many big things, among them, a big birthday. So it is time for a big goal. Time to get running, Abby!

I chose this goal because

To invoke a favorite phrase coined by a friend, 2010 is the "Year of the Fit Woman," and I have been working diligently to make it so. 2010 also happens to be the "Year of the Big 3-0" for me, and I have been thinking up ways to welcome this new decade in a manner that is bold, yet sensible, which is how I am hoping my 30s will be.

Enter, 5k!

Bold, because I have never ever run for any reason except to catch the bus. And you Bay Area friends know I hardly ever take Muni to begin with, so you get the picture. Up until this point, I have really disliked running, what with all the sweating and such, so this goal of doing it on purpose, and for more than half a city block's length at a time, is a bold goal indeed. Like woah.

Sensible, because of a training regimen called Couch to 5k, available for free on the interwebs. To quote one website: "C25k is a fantastic program that's been designed to get just about anyone from the couch to running 5 kilometers or 30 minutes in just 9 weeks." I've done my research, and the plan is simple and straightforward and downright sensible enough to convince this "just about anyone" that I can do it.

What awaits me in 9 weeks, you might ask? The See Jane Run Women's Half Marathon and 5k at Crown Beach in Alameda, CA, that's what. The race is on Saturday, June 5 and I am already registered.

I'm doing this for myself, but I'm also doing it to raise money for a truly outstanding organization: At The Crossroads. So that's where you come in. For your part, I ask you to consider giving to the good of the cause. All contributions go directly to ATC's work with homeless youth and are sincerely appreciated, no matter the amount. For my part, I will be posting a weekly blog post with details of my training exploits to date. NINE blog posts, people, written in a timely fashion. That is a formidable goal on its own for this correspondence-challenged gal. I know many of you are thinking you'll need to see it to believe it, but believe it you shall.

I'm helping because

I'm thrilled to be using this goal to raise money for At The Crossroads.

For me, running my first 5k is about respect and challenge and support: respecting myself and my capabilities, challenging myself to set an important goal, and calling on my family and friends for support as I work to achieve it.

At The Crossroads shares those same values. Every day, ATC's stellar staff members respect their clients as individuals, challenge them to set goals and dream big, and support them as they build healthy and fulfilling lives. And they do it all with humility, grace, a sense of humor and without judgment or personal agenda. Now I ask you, who can't get behind that?

I have set an ambitious fundraising goal, but with your help I can get there. If you're new to ATC, I hope you'll learn more about their work on their website – their short documentary is a great introduction. Old friends of ATC, I know you agree with me that it is a privilege to support their work.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

c25k training update numero dos:

People! I am overwhelmed! Your support is so appreciated and just incredibly inspiring and motivating to me, your friend the budding runner. Thank you for your generosity of wallet(!) and of spirit(!!).

Please be assured that I am, in the words of Donna Summer, working hard for your money, so hard for it honey. Case in point, this morning I woke up and went to the gym. At 7:00am on a Saturday. And thusly completed the first week of the c25k training program.

Observations from the first week:

1. The Castro Gold's continues to treat me very well. It takes me exactly my five minute warm-up walk to get there, there is always a treadmill waiting for me, and the patrons continue to regard me with genial and complete disinterest. Bingo.

2. Even in three workouts, I can feel an improvement in my stamina. It is slight, but it is there, and it makes me very excited to feel what week nine is like!

3. I learned that several friends are going to be running the See Jane Run half-marathon at the same time as my 5k, so I'm going to have some great company at the starting line. I am lucky to have so many strong, inspiring and sporty people in my life. It is fun to pursue a goal that puts me in their company.

Case in point: Monday is the first workout of week two, and I'll be running it on the Stanford track with a couple of coworkers. Bring on the great outdoors!

I have to know -- where did you get the body tarp photo? I love it.

Ilana, you'll love it even more because I saw it for the first time on one of those NYC cab televisions. I think it is an ad for Crunch Gym.

c25K training update numero uno:

This is my first official post, because I just completed my first official workout of the c25k program, and I'm proud to say that it went well. The picture I took of myself is proof of the fun, and should be titled, "Helllloooooo, endorphins!"

Observations from the first workout:

1. Are you an out-of-shape woman running in public for the first time? Do you suffer from middle-school-esque levels of self-centered paranoia about the way you will look while doing said running? Have I got the place for you! God bless the Castro Gold's Gym. I may as well have been wearing the 'body tarp' (see below).

2. Running is really a lot more enjoyable than I thought. Especially when done in 60-second increments.

3. On the television during my workout: Armageddon. Saving the world from certain asteroid doom = very motivating!
