Sorry for the delay - I meant to do this earlier and was too busy. You are awesome and so inspiring. What a fantastic mitzvah!

Goal

I am going to perform an act of kindness/community service EVERY DAY from February 1 to April 1

(60 days!). 25 cents a day = $15 50 cents a day = $30 $1 a day = $60

I think this will be interesting and I'll need to get creative! However, I need ideas! Send me some!

I'm going to keep a daily blog (scroll down) of what I do every day to keep me honest!

I chose this goal because

I was inspired by:

1. "Be the change you seek in the world." Gandhi

2. The notion of Tikkun Olam, which is a Jewish belief that we have a duty to do our part to "heal the world." The notion says that we can't fix the world all at once, we do it one day at a time, person at a time, one deed at a time.

3. Barack Obama's acceptance speech: November 4, 2008.

" It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day."

"I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years -- block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand."

"It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other."

4. I believe in the mission of At the Crossroads: empowering the homeless to improve their own lives. The organization promotes idea that each client has the option to make positive choices in their life and ATC is there to support positive choices, but in the end it's up to the individual. ATC has an unfailing commitment to seeing potential in their clients.

I'm helping because

I first got involved with ATC 2 years ago on an afternoon volunteering on behalf of Gap Inc, my employer. ATC's mission: Through one-on-one counseling meetings at a safe place of the young person's choosing, we work with clients to tackle their immediate issues, identify both short and long-term goals, and develop concrete plans to achieve them. These goals might include getting off of the streets, pursuing their passions, making new friends, or finding meaningful employment. Most importantly, we help our clients figure out how make healthy decisions for themselves, empowering them to lead the lives that they want.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 10 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

4/1: I DID IT! This is the last official day of my campaign - so sad! Today I gave pears to two homeless men in San Francisco on my way to work.

3/31: I played with kids at Haven House, a transitional home for homeless families. We played "follow the leader" and went all around the premises and took polaroid pictures of the kids in different rooms (some kids even got into the dryer in the laundry room!). When we got back, the kids had to put the photos in the order they were taken. We had a lot of fun!

3/28: Volunteered at a life skills event for residents of the Maple Street Shelter in Redwood City. Haircuts were provided by the cosmetology students of Skyline College, and the Junior League provided breakfast, help with housing/job searches on the internet, personal hygiene products for participants, a motivational speaker, and brought a "shop" of clothing for residents to improve their wardrobes for their jobs or interviews. I talked with many of the residents and they had interesting stories - many of them are on a path to self-sufficiency and success. I even met a man that works at Old Navy - we thought it was neat that we work for the same company! http://www.shelternetwork.org/maple.html

2/28: I saw an article in the San Mateo Daily Journal earlier this week that touched my heart: The story of an 11 year old boy named Ben who plays his guitar every weekend outside a bakery in Woodside, CA and gives the money to buy wheelchairs for Iraqi children. 2/22: We're in Tahoe skiing this weekend, that's why I'm doing the cash donations as my good deeds. I sent a donation to Second Harvest, a food bank where I have volunteered in the past.

A little something from their most recent fundraising letter:

"The last half of 2008 was a tough one. We had planned for a 3% increase in service delivery, but during the last six months of the year, on average the Food Bank served 13% more individuals and provided 16% more food than we did during this same time period in 2007."

My donation will buy 40 meals (food banks have great negotiating power) including:

* 4 Hams * 20 Pounds Potatoes * 2 Industrial-size Cans of Green Beans * 8 Pounds Fresh Carrots

* 40 Servings of Fresh Fruit * 40 Rolls

2/17: I DID IT! I took a 5 minute shower. California will most likely face a severe water shortage this summer, as the rainy season has not been rainy at all until the last week. Now, for those that want to do this: 5 minute showers take focus and perfect execution and also a timer. I received one for Valentine's Day (and also a Brazilian seed bracelet). 2/13: I gave oranges to several homeless persons in San Francisco. It's definitely a change on my walk from Cal Train to the office (along the Embarcadero) when I actively look for homeless people rather than zone out talking on my phone. It got me thinking - what does a homeless person look like? I've heard from Rob (ATC's founder) that many homeless people try very hard not to look homeless. However, I was nervous to give an orange to someone who looked scruffy and had a backpack and hooded sweatshirt - what if they aren't homeless after all? So I stuck to the more obvious homeless - with shopping carts, tents, sleeping bags, etc. Definitely got me thinking that there are probably a lot more homeless than meet the eye...and not to judge a book by its cover.
