All I can come up with is "Happy and healthy baby!"
Vanessa Holden, Little Sister$10Sparta, NJ02/01/2010
I predict that the little baby child will show up whatever sex/gender she/he wants to be...and the same goes for size and hair style (which will change in the first year anyway). But let's get to the important part: the baby child will obviously be named after me. Vanessa can work well as a middle name with some of the names that are already on the table: Thelonious Vanessa or even Fiona Vanessa. Of course there is always Vanessa as a first name: Vanessa Filbert or Vanessa Cammilita. I'm not saying, I'm just saying. Much love to you both and to the wee Baby Child! Vanessa

We are very excited for you! Just don't give birth before you visit us in Tucson... plus you really should cook those things for the recommended amount of time (or more). Long live women who survive pregnancy and birth! Thank goodness kids are worth it!

Little Lucille Rita (named, of course, for the beautiful and talented Lucille Clifton and Rita Dove) will enter the world on June 1, complete with a fierce attitude and dreadlocks. And she will be overwhelmed with love.

I predict it is going to be a little girl, 8 lbs 4 oz, 22", with braids and you are going to name her Emily Madgetta, which by the way would be a great name for a little girl in a child's book if you decide not to use it for your own super cute baby :-)

I predict she will come June 7, and her name will not be whatever that waitress begged you to name her--was it Zanzibar? Rather, I am betting she will be named after a grandmother or great-grandmother. Or she will be named Clementine for all the oranges you ate. Or Pearl for how pretty she will be. Congrats!

Goal

Bet on our baby: Support at risk youth at the same time! You'll win no matter what. All you need to do: 1) Make a donation to ATC; 2) In your comment guess the date of arrival, sex, weight, length, hairstyle, and even the name of our coming little one. The donor whose prediction most closely resembles our baby on it's birth day will win a fabulous gift from a grateful mom and dad.

Our first baby is due to be born on June 8. We want to know what sort of appearance friends, family, strangers think our child will make. In the meantime, the youth served by ATC will win thanks to each and every donation we receive. Everyone will walk away a winner. Those are even better odds than your chances of meeting one of Tiger's girlfriends next time you're in Vegas.

I chose this goal because

We've never had a baby before, and while it feels like an intensely personal experience, we realize that everyone in the world has been involved in at least one birth during their lifetime. So why not let the public in on the fun and let you all place your wagers on our kid? Plenty of people have made their predictions known already. For instance, current name suggestions include Thelonius, Mingus, Wildcat, Panther, Cletus, Filbert, Fiona, Filene, Camille, and Camilita.

People want to make their predictions about our baby known. People love an opportunity to give to good causes. We've linked these two great impulses through our campaign.

I'm helping because

Our baby will be born into a community of love and support, and this will help him/her achieve his/her full potential. Not every youth meets such lucky circumstances. As we bring a new life into this world, we want to make sure the youths served by ATC also have the chance to lead excellent lives. This little game we're playing seemed a fun way to help support ATC's important mission.

We've worked to support the efforts of ATC for a few years now. It might be easy, with our own little family on the way, to direct our focus inward and stop worrying about the efforts of this amazing and much needed organization, but we want to make sure our little one knows from the very beginning that part of the way to build an excellent life is to help others build excellent lives. What better way to remind a child of this lesson than to saddle him/her with a name we chose with the help of an online fund raising campaign?

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

Also (please forgive me but my first week of being a dad is rather energy consuming), honorable mentions are Emily Merriman for being a quarter inch too long but right on time with our JOY, and Chris for the copious hair and appreciation of 'trane.

Again, thank you all for your support!

Callie Violet arrived right on time, 2:08 pm, Tuesday, June 8. Among the 'winners' are

@Renee for a happy and healthy baby (yes, she smiles!)

@The Van Burens and Kristen for lots of hair (which dad finds fun to comb!)

@Stefano for being so close

@Suzanne for hitting the name and reasoning

@Nicholas for us enjoying her laugh

and especially ATC for the great work they do for far less fortunate children.

June! Ray's wish for a June baby will come true!

Camille is growing and enjoying this latter stage of pregnancy as much as anyone can (check with a mother of a young child or one with a good memory for more details). Buoyed by the long held surprise, the arrival of his/her Aunt Kathryn, our child has everything it needs to emerge into the world.

Thanks for your continued support for ATC during this last stretch-Ray

We're in the home stretch! Baby's due sometime in the next 2 to 4 weeks! Baby's head down and getting ready to go. In fact, Camille experienced her first "practice contractions" on Sunday night. Adventure! We've got the crib and the changing table up, diapers, baby clothes, hooded towels, a washtub....everything but the baby. Take a look at this final baby in the belly picture and make your last predictions!

I think your baby will be a girl, weighing 8 pounds, 21 inches long with lots of hair like mama and dada, and you're gonna call her Joy. (Well, at least she is going to be a joy!) Love your campaign! Thinking of you and sending lots of positive energy for delivery.

Yes, we are taking some 'couple' time while we prepare. Actual pictures coming soon...

Just shy of 35 weeks, Camille and the fetus are headed out for their final airplane journey. This will be the fetus's first trip out of the country. S/he's headed to Vancouver, Canada to meet a hoard of pediatricians and see what the big fuss about the Canadian Rockies is all about.

Fetus and parents both are enjoying all the predictions and name suggestions. There are some particularly good ones in the running. Keep them coming!

Camille is 33 weeks along now (out of a medical average of 40 weeks). She's growing faster by the day! Her usual sashay has been replaced by a weary waddle. She's actually beginning to admit that she gets tired sometimes. Only a few more weeks until little baby Dungy-Black arrives (both Camille and her sister were born a week early). We're hoping to kick this campaign into high gear in the coming weeks. Thanks for your support!

New baby news update: Last week Ray, Camille, and the fetus went to our 6 1/2 month prenatal office visit. When Ray said he thought it would be nice if the baby were under 8 pounds, the nurse midwife suggested we probably shouldn't bet on that. Along with being a jet setter (the fetus seems to love the roar of the jet engine), it is also prepared to excel, showing up in the top percentiles already.

So I (daddy-to-be) felt the little one kicking during the Super Bowl (maybe wanting his cousin's former team to try harder?). Mom is about to be on the road again (Lubbock Texas and reading at Texas Tech). Thank you for your support! Spread the word to friends and friends-to-be!

For your guestimation information:

A nice lady we met today predicted the baby's going to be a boy because Camille's carrying so far out front. Then again, Camille had wicked morning sickness, and so all the ladies we met during that phase told us the baby was going to be a girl. A smart girl with a lot of hair. The first children in Ray's family have always been boys. But then again, Ray's exceptional, so maybe his child will be too. Of course, all prenatal tests thus far show the fetus is not exceptional as far as weight, size, or similar developmental markers are concerned. That is to say, everything is progressing perfectly normally thus far.

Chris, I like the weight estimate, it's about the same weight as Camille's own birth weight. We only nitpick with the date of arrival. This little one's due date is June 8th, so April 27th, though a very special day, no doubt, might be a tad early for this one. The OB says a good range would be between May 17 and June 29.
