We Think Erica Can
Support My Pride Has A Price while helping homeless youth
Goal
I'm exploiting my magnetic-to-awkward-situations life to raise some serious moolah for ATC. I figure that the best way to get you to contribute is to convince you that you’re getting something out of it, too. So I’ve created four benchmarks to indicate my progress on the way to my goal - read on to decide how badly you want to see me rule out any future social success in SF…
For $250: TOURIST TRAP
I will dress as a tourist taking myself very seriously – on a Segway tour of San Francisco. I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen one of these tours, but participants are pretty much guaranteed to look like tools. I’ll make sure to thoroughly photo-document the event, but keep an eye out for me on the sidewalks – fanny pack and all.
***Important Note: Your donation goes directly to ATC - I'm putting the cost for the Segway tour on my own tab.
For $500: DANCE MACHINE
I’ve never been known as what we’ll term a “coordinated individual,” but I promise to display what (very) limited athletic skills I have in a choreographed dance to a well-known song. The hitch? It WILL be an embarrassing song choice, and it WILL be posted on YouTube. You know you want to see this, so plan on pitching in.
For $750: JUKEBOX JUNKIE
I will dress in complete 80’s get-up and hit up a karaoke bar ready to perform the best of Pat Benatar. In my zeal for theatrical singing, I tend to go dangerously overboard (hint to all: keep your eyes open while descending stairs, no matter how much you love belting showtunes). So hit me with your best shot of a donation and help me make a blue-eyeshadowed fool of myself.
For $1000: THE FULL MONTY
I will celebrate my goal success by breaching my biggest fear. I have a severe aversion to states of undress and I stretch this to such absurd limits as to even take bubble baths in my bathing suit (never-nude syndrome, anyone?). It’s bizarre, I know, and it could be that it’s time to conquer this fear. Help me raise $1000 – and I’ll streak somewhere in the city. While this may be fairly commonplace in a place like SF, it’s a huge feat for me (especially as I’m going to need at least one documented witness!). So give a little love to ATC, and I’ll show a little skin to San Francisco.
P.S. Everyone who donates will be given personal shout-outs on Facebook as recognition for their support (and if it includes a little social pressure, why not?). The individual who gives the biggest donation will have the honor of having their face printed with “My #1 Fan!” on a t-shirt that I will wear for a half-marathon I’m running at the end of March. If that’s not incentive, I don’t know what is.
I chose this goal because
I am frighteningly good at accidentally attracting awkward life events, but I’m going to stop trying to avoid these bizarre happenings (which usually makes it worse anyway) and embrace the socially uncomfortable lifestyle to make a buck for ATC. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?
I'm helping because
Through the development of caring relationships with our clients, ATC is able to support the empowerment and individuality of each person we work with. We try to make services as available to our clients as possible and our first priority is meeting their needs. I started working for At The Crossroads because I respected these values, but now because of the work I am privileged enough to call my job, I believe in these values, too.
About At The Crossroads
ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 10 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.
