Goal

My goal is to devote 5 hours a week to ATC and different non-profits around San Francisco. I will do this for 10 weeks (or maybe even longer!)

Over the last year and a half since I have lived in San Francisco, I have volunteered for a variety of community service projects, typically once or twice a month. These projects have ranged from sorting cans and boxes of food for the SF Food Bank, landscaping gardens by the 16th Ave Tiled Stairs, feeding the homeless at Glide, and preparing Thanksgiving dinner at Fisher House to name a few...

While I enjoyed the variety of all of these projects, I have been trying to find a local nonprofit in San Francisco that I would like to volunteer with on a regular basis. So, in the next 10 weeks or so, my goal is to volunteer an average of 5 hours a week so that I spend more time getting to know different nonprofits and find a place to devote my volunteer hours to.

I chose this goal because

I chose this goal because I would like to have more depth and connection with the community service that I do. I would like to be totally passionate about a cause. I would like to know the "clients" who my work is benefiting.

I'm helping because

I recently became involved with ATC, when I volunteered at a Supply Prep night. I was impressed by their mission and by the impact that they have been able to make over the years.

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 10 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

Hi All,

When I signed up for my I Think I Can Campaign in late January, I knew that the 10 weeks would fly by. Fast forward...here we are in late April!

I actually extended my campaign for another week...and I was able to meet and exceed my stretch goal to volunteer an average of 5 hours a week for local non-profits. Overall, I volunteered 64 total hours (that’s about 6 hours a week).

These are the types of volunteer projects I took on...

* Visited local businesses and restaurants on behalf of ATC (At the Crossroads), building ongoing relationships, and getting in-kind donations of products and gift certificates for ATC

* Served as an Event Manager for One Brick (a volunteer service organization) doing supply preparation for the homeless at ATC

* Volunteered at a fundraising event for the Crohn and Colitis Foundation of America

* Coordinated a volunteer service project for my co-workers to feed the homeless during a dinner service at Glide http://www.glide.org/Story.aspx

This campaign allowed me to take a deeper look into different non-profit organizations (including ATC) and their missions. This experience reinforced my desire to contribute to my local community. I know that I will continue to volunteer at all of these non-profits on a regular basis.

Thank you so much to those of you who have donated to my campaign!...And thank you to those of who have been my cheerleaders during the last 11 weeks. Your support has been a real source of motivation for me!

I was searching for an old high school classmate called Kuo Sze-Ern. He and I both graduated in 1962 from St. Francis Xavier in Hong Kong. If he is indeed the same individual (I presume he is your father), please forward my email address to him so I can stay in touch. Our 50th anniversary is coming up soon.
