Dear Marc, Will you please learn some pop/rock classics on ukelele? I like Man in the Mirror but it might be hard to do on the uke. How about Feels like the First Time or American Pie? Or maybe something by Ke$ha?

I think this is a great cause, and I can't wait to hear Marc play.

Goal

My goal is raise some money for ATC and to treat my family to the sweet sweet sounds of the ukelele at the same time. I have enrolled in an "Intro to the Ukelele" class at the Zambaleta Music School (one block from my house in the Mission) and with your support I will practice diligently and learn to play rock anthems and Hawaiian classics on my ukelele in 8 short weeks. If that's too advanced, or if my 8 month old son doesn't want to hear anything by Guns'n'Roses or Don Ho I'll take other requests too.

I chose this goal because

I've committed to raising money for ATC because there are over 5,000 homeless and unsuitably housed young people in San Francisco and ATC's work is crucially important in addressing their needs. I've chosen to take music classes because I played piano as a kid (and, for a mercifully brief time in junior high, the saxophone) and am envious of everyone who can pick up an instrument and have fun playing it. Also I have a hunch that the ukelele is going to be easier to pick up in a couple months than the harp or bassoon. (Hope I am not wrong about that).

I'm helping because

I believe San Francisco is a city not just for the wealthy but for everyone, and I want it to be a place I am even more proud to call home.

I've volunteered and contributed to ATC in the past and in every encounter I’ve been impressed by the ways in which I am educated, involved, and invited to deepen my engagement with ATC. More than that I appreciate the way in which my contributions are always valued by the hard-working staff.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING MY CAMPAIGN AND ATC!

and here are a couple of inspirational ukelele videos for ya:

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

Five days to go until my April Fool's deadline and I am so psyched to have 53 supporters and raised $3000 for ATC!

Clearly this campaign has caught on and its having an influence in the music world too. Why else would Eddie Vedder be releasing an all uke album?

http://blog.seattlepi.com/thebigblog/2011/03/22/eddie-vedder-of-pearl-jam-to-release-solo-ukulele-record/

Closer to home I am having fun practicing, took the plunge and bought a tuner at the Aloha Warehouse in Japantown yesterday and my teacher, Chris Lauf, at Zambaleta is so good that i've actually signed up for more lessons (yes, I need them).

I also attended my second Board meeting for ATC this past week and the more I learn about the organization the more impressed I am with the commitment, creativity and courage that the entire staff brings to work. It's a privilege to offer some support and I am very grateful to all the folks at ATC and to all the folks who're supporting my campaign.

I got 4 strings and 5 days left to get to $5000!

thanks for your support!

In our first 20 second music video Felix reacts powerfully to the sounds of a recent ukulele practice session. Check it out:http://vimeo.com/20592050

We have a lot of work to do before we’re ready for a national tour, but the lessons are fun and we’re making some progress.

More impressive than my uke-noodling is the fact that 25 friends have made donations ranging from $10 to $250 and helped me raise over $1300 for At The Crossroads!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I have just 4 weeks left in my fundraising campaign and I am hoping more supporters will help me reach my $2500 goal and even (gulp) double it. It’s a stretch but the generosity at all levels has been awesome and every dollar we raise will be extremely well spent by ATC as they help homeless youth in SF build outstanding lives.

"Marc, you are a great guitar player." - Tess, age 4

"Yeah, Marc you are good at guitar" - Hannah, age 5

Four ukelele lessons down and slowly, ever so slowly, I am starting to make….music. It's pretty gratifying to see improvement in my strumming and in maneuvering my fingers from one chord to another. I don't know if covering Paradise City or Welcome to the Jungle is going to happen by April 1, but Radiohead's Creep might be doable….

As the rave reviews from the ladies who came over and heard me play the other day indicate, the encouragement I've been getting is awesome.

Thank you for your support!

Two weeks into ukelele-ing and I've the C and F chords under control and gradually bending the demonic three-fingered G and D chords to my will. Classes are super fun, and Felix continues to be amused.

ALSO - I am THRILLED by the donations that have come in already --- so i've doubled my fundraising goal from $2,500 to $5,000!
