Goal

I'm going to give up texting for the ENTIRE month of February. That's right, NO texting!

Starting at Midnight on February 1 through midnight of March 1, I will not send out any text messages from my phone.

I can still receive text messages, so feel free to send me one! ;) But I will only respond via phone call, email, facebook or other means.

Updated Rules: Just to keep this going and make things more interesting, I've added another condition! For the entire month of March (March 1-31) I will only text people who have donated to the campaign! :)

Now... this applies to anyone who has donated in February, as well a anyone who donates in March. And it applies to any donation amount, so there's no minimum requirement or anything. Simple as that!

I chose this goal because

If you spend a lot of time around me, you probably know what an addict I am. I've got my phone in my hand most of the time, if it isn't resting somewhere that I can see it. I check it all the time, I send out random messages all day long, and I engage in day-long text conversations with various friends.

But I know that it's a bad habit. It's rude to my friends and family, it's dangerous when I'm driving, and it's irresponsible at work or while I'm busy with something. So... I'm going to see if I can break my nasty habit while raising some dough for a good cause ;)

I'm helping because

I just want to help people however I can. I don't know what the best way to do that is, but I'm trying all the time and I feel this is a really good one :)

I've been volunteering with ATC since May of 2010 and I immediately felt a connection with their mission. At the Crossroads believes that everyone deserves to live the kind of life that THEY want to live--not the kind of life that they are told they should want.

I think that everyone deserves a chance to figure out what they want to do with their life, and we all deserve access to information and resources to help us figure that out. ATC works with their clients in a no-pressure environment and offers as much support/guidance as is welcomed, without ulterior motives or agendas.

Why should YOU help out?? Here are some possible reasons:

A) You support ATC's mission and really want to help homeless youth in San Francisco

B) You support any cause that leads me to put down the damn phone :P

C) Maybe you are trying to impress me or get on my good side? ;)

D) You just have extra money lying around and you REALLY want to donate it but aren't sure where

E) You're bored

F) You're rebelling against your conservative parents who don't support "charities" ?

G) You just want me to shut up and leave you alone already with all these fundraisers ;)

H) Building up that good karma for 2011, baby!!!

About At The Crossroads

ATC walks the streets of San Francisco, reaching out to homeless youth and young adults on their turf. We work with young people who others have given up on, who would not get help without us. Since we started 13 years ago, we have worked with more than 5,000 youth, helping them build outstanding lives.

Updates

All done! My test of endurance and self sacrifice is complete and I am free to text as much as I want... WOO!! But in the last couple of days, I've still only sent out a couple of messages, and mostly they were functional (i.e. "on my way"). So, hopefully, I'll be able to retain my newfound restraint :P

Thanks so much to everyone who supported me (and who continues to support me). I raised more than I thought I would and I am touched by your generosity. So glad to help out this wonderful organization! <3 <3 <3

Wow, last day already! Well, sort of... I can begin texting again as of tomorrow, but only to donors. I just wonder how much I will be compelled to actually send out texts? I've started thinking a lot more about the messages I send out and most of them are pretty insubstantial... so maybe I'm better off keeping these random missives to myself? Or do you people enjoy them? :P (Hey, you all know how fascinating I find myself--I just wanna share hehe)

Anyway, so if you've donated already, yay! And if not, then hurry up and do it so that I can send you a thank you text! :)

xoxo

I reached my initial goal of $500, and still over a month to go in the campaign... SO I raised it to $750! Every little bit helps, friends. And in a few days, I'll be texting all you lovely people who have donated :) <3 xoxo

I'm getting used to not texting... it's starting to become more and more apparent how little it is really needed. Granted, I'm not in contact with my friends as often anymore. Sometimes it's nice just to have a few texts back and forth with someone you haven't seen in a while...

In any case, I am looking forward to at least being able to send texts like "I'm on my way" or the like. I hate having to call. In fact, I really hate having phone conversations. <looks at phone forlornly>

It's valentine's day and I can't even respond with a "You too!! :D :D <3 <3" to all these mass texts wishing me a happy Valentine's Day. :P Just kidding. I didn't get any texts. :(

Just kidding! Naw, forreals.. here's a happy Valentine's Day to all my lovelies :* :*

Dude. I'm on Day 10 already! This hasn't been as difficult as I thought at all!

Ok, there were a few times when I REALLY wished I could send out a text. Like on Superbowl Sunday, while I enjoyed 80+ degree weather at a BBQ in Benicia, I desperately wished to text my East Coast friends and brag of my good fortune. (e.g. "man, it's so hot here! I should have brought sunscreen. SUCKAS.")

And yeah, there have been a few times that texting would have been far more convenient than calling or emailing someone. But hey, we all lived without SMS just fine for many years, so what's the big deal now?

I definitely feel a little better about not checking my phone obsessively... 18 more days. :O

It's been more than 3 full days now without ANY texting! I have to say, it hasn't been quite as difficult as I'd imagined (so far). But it's kind of like going on a diet, right? The first few days aren't so bad, and then some evil friend offers you a slice of delicious chocolate cake... and all of a sudden, your resolve starts to crumble and you can almost taste that sweet, sweet frosting... Ah yes, but I was talking about text messaging.

Anyway, so are you gonna give me your money now or what? :P
