You can volunteer anytime Monday through Friday between about 10 AM and 8 PM.

To see all of our roles, click here. People help out with things like making food boxes, doing online research, calling potential referral sites for our clients, data entry…the list goes on and on.

Right now, our biggest needs are:

• Food Bank Supply Stocker
• Food Bank Shopper
• Office Hours Savior (particularly on Wednesdays & Thursdays)
• Chore Champion
• Someone who has a car to do a quick sandwich pickup on Thursday late afternoon

Hike Volunteers would be responsible for tracking donations, supporting hikers through their fundraising efforts, obtaining in-kind donations, and other general development tasks.

Hands down the best cookies in the city! Anthony’s Cookies located on Valencia Street is not only our neighbor in the Mission but also a generous supporter of ATC!

Making sure our hikers get all the necessary nutrients to climb Tam is Bella Viva Orchards, whose amazing dried fruits fueled us all to the top! 2013 Hikers beware: ATC loves Bella Viva and we can eat. Fast.

A longtime supporter of ATC events, Bi-Rite is one of our lovely and loyal neighbors here in the Mission. They helped us out with a bunch of our hiking needs in the form of a gift certificate!

Bryan’s Grocery
Bryan’s Grocery on California Street provided our hikers with an incredible salad for the post-hike picnic! Bryan’s Grocery is a sparkling clean, well organized market, known for superior meats!

Canyon Market of Glen Park is an independent, full-service market who graciously donated a gift certificate for our Summer SunDay needs! We purchased mouthwatering cookies and brownies, and some of their local cheese!

Clif Bars are tasty, healthy, give you energy, and are made with organic ingredients. And, they’re based locally in Berkeley. Delicious and sustainable? Yes, please! Clif Bars helped sustain our hikers throughout the eight miles.

Della Fattoria has been a longtime supporter of ATC (and our appetites) and donated their brick-oven-baked, gourmet bread to Summer SunDay! Their handcrafted loaves were the perfect snack for our hungry hikers!

Yukio Hamada and his children grow their fantastic fruit in Kingsburg, CA. From the exotic (pluots, pumelos, shaddock) to the classic (nectarines, cherries, apples) our hikers were well taken care of by the Hamada’s generosity!

Pickled vegetables have never tasted so good. Happy Girl Kitchen Co. is a longtime supporter, and came through again by providing our hikers with refreshing pickles to go along with their post hike lunch!

Ike’s Place
Creative, delicious, and unique are just three of the ways we can describe the sandwiches from one of San Francisco’s most famous sandwich shops, Ike’s Place. With over 80 sandwiches on the menu, it’s impossible to pick just one favorite! Ike generously donated his sandwiches to our post-hike lunch!

Jelly Belly
Jelly Belly provided an awesome assortment of jelly beans for our hiker thank you bags. If you haven’t visited the home of Jelly Belly in Fairfield then you need to add the famous factory tour to your summer bucket list – visit on a holiday and you’ll see a special dance by the factory robots!

K&J Orchards
Cherries, peaches, pluots, oh my! K&J Orchards fulfilled all of our hikers’ fruit dreams with their incredible produce, all grown in Winters, CA. ATC has been enjoying K&J for years, and we were happy to share with our hikers!

Mission Minis
If you like your cupcakes bite sized and delicious, then Mission Minis will surely satisfy your sweet tooth! Saving the best for last, they donated their treats to our post-hike lunch.

Rainbow Grocery
With a strong philanthropic mission, Rainbow Grocery has flourished since their 1975 opening. As a neighbor of At The Crossroads, we were so appreciative of their very generous gift certificate donation to our hike since we all love their fresh food and Cooperative structure!

Longtime friends and supporters of ATC, the incredible San Francisco based bag company, Rickshaw, graciously donated custom made bags for our thank you bags! Our hikers were struttin’ in style after the hike with their new Rickshaw bag!

The story of Safeway began way back in 1915 when a young man purchased a tiny grocery store in a small Idaho town. Over the years, Safeway has grown to over 1,700 stores, but even with their popularity, they still continue to be generous towards their community partners. Longtime friends and supporters of ATC, Social Imprints hooked our hikers up once again! They printed hike t-shirts for each hiker, and we couldn’t be more grateful! With their strong social mission, they are always up for helping out their community, thanks Social Imprints!

Our friends at Sports Basement made it happen for the hike, a gift certificate to cover all our hike needs! They’re basically the experts in all things outdoors – and sports – related, so we always imbibe what they’ve got to offer.

As a longtime supporter of ATC, Sukhi and her family have fed us on multiple occasions and we never get tired of her flavorful curry pastes, spice mixes, and chutneys! Sukhi’s donated food for both the hike and our thank you bags! Based in the Bay Area since 1992, Sukhi certainly knows her stuff.

The fine people at Trader Joe’s helped us out with a gift certificate for our Summer SunDay needs! Unfortunately, there wasn’t any Two Buck Chuck on the hike, but we’re just as big of fans when it comes to their other treats!

Not only did Whole Foods Franklin provide our hikers with energy and fruit bars, but they also donated sunscreen and other awesome items for our hikers!

Yerena Farms
These Watsonville-bred berries made their way up to the mountain for our hikers’ eating pleasures last year, by the way of the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. These organic berries have been raised by the Yerena siblings and their parents for over 20 years!

This is a simple volunteer activity you can do from the comfort of your own home!

If you have good handwriting, an eye for detail, and some free time over the next couple of months, we’d love your help!

ATC’s mailing list has expanded to 3,500 people, and we want everyone on it to actually open what we send them and read what is inside. That’s where you come in, because handwritten envelopes and notes are the key to making this happen.

During March, April, and May, we need people who have at least 2 hours of time to address envelopes and write notes to our supporters. It’s easy and has a huge impact on ATC’s ability to raise much-needed support.

We’d need you to come by, pick up some envelopes, letters, or note cards, use your lovely penmanship, and then return them. Simple!

Every year, At The Crossroads puts out two newsletters, which are read by more than 5,000 people. We focus on a different theme for each one and we try very hard to make them interesting and educational. We interview clients, community partners, and staff members, among other people, and we need your help making sure that their words get captured properly. You’ll be playing an important role in educating the community about our clients and the issues that affect them!

The process is easy:
1) We email you a file (or you pick up a recorder)
2) You type, type, type
3) You email us back the Word doc

Who it will help: youth with whom we have not succeeded in building consistent, in-depth counseling relationships. There are many reasons why this happens:

• They have such severe mental health or substance use issues that making it to appointments at a specific time is very hard.
• They are fearful of, or uncomfortable with, asking for help, and are slow to trust. They’ll talk with us on outreach, but aren’t motivated to meet individually with us.
• Their lives are so chaotic that between the time they set up an appointment and the time it rolls around, something comes up that interferes, even if it is only 24 hours away; often it is longer than that, when ATC is very busy.
• They are prioritizing survival above everything else, so meeting with us is not a priority.

What we will do:

• Every month, ATC will draw up a list of 30-60 clients whom we have seen many times during nighttime street outreach, but with whom we have not been able to build deeper relationships. These are youth who have never met with us one-to-one, or have only done so on rare occasion.
• During the day, our most experienced counselors, the ones who have the best relationships with our clients, will walk the streets of the Downtown/Tenderloin & Mission neighborhoods, looking for these youth.
• When the counselor sees one of these clients, she will invite him to grab a bite.
• She’ll take him out to lunch, and have an on-the-spot counseling meeting – no wait, no barriers, and no hoops to jump through.
• We’ll be out there multiple times a week, trying to reach as many of these targeted youth as possible.

When we will launch it: We will be adding two new counselors to our staff in early 2013. Once they are fully trained, which should be around May, we will start up the new program.

Where we will carry it out: The same neighborhoods where we do our nighttime street outreach: the Downtown/Tenderloin area and Mission district. We may also go to other areas of the city, if it is more likely that we will find our clients there. We’re still figuring that out.

Why we are launching this program:

• We have learned over the years that when we are able to forge in-depth, long-term, unconditional counseling relationships with our clients, amazing things happen. This new program will enable us to build these relationships with the youth with whom we have the hardest time connecting.
• Our goal, from day one, has been to reach the hardest-to-reach homeless youth, and provide them with the support they need to build outstanding lives. We have not been succeeding with some of our clients. While we have been reaching them on outreach, we have not been able to build the deeper relationships that can have transformative effects on their lives. We have not been offering them the right kind of help. We think that this will be a better model for the kids that have the hardest time connecting with us.
• Because every young person we see on the streets has the potential to build safe, healthy, fulfilling lives. Our job is to do everything we can to help make this happen for each and every person we meet, no matter what the challenges in forging the connection. While there is so much more we can do, this feels like an important step forward.
