About Summer SunDay

What is Summer SunDay?

Summer SunDay is a half-day hike up the beautiful Mount Tamalpais in Marin County on July 16. It is a fundraiser for At The Crossroads, a nonprofit organization that works with homeless youth and young adults in San Francisco. Hikers send out three pre-written sponsorship emails to their communities to raise support, or make a substantial donation to their own hike.

Click here to learn more about ATC.

When does registration end?

The last day you can register is July 7! You need to sign up by then in order to join the hike.

Where does it take place?

It starts and ends at the Mountain Theater. Please park in the Quarry Parking Area, located on Ridgecrest Blvd near Mountain Theater. Click here for Google map and directions. Click here for very good, detailed, specific directions.

When does the Hike occur, and how long does it last?

The hike place takes on Sunday, July 16. You can start hiking anytime between 8 and 10 AM. The full hike, which is about 8 miles, will take 4 to 5 hours, including breaks. The 3-mile loop will take about 1 to 1.5 hours.

How does it work to participate?

  • You sign up and decide if you want to send out sponsorship emails or make a substantial donation to your own hike (minimum $250 donation required to donate in lieu of fundraising)
  • If you want to donate, you donate, and then you are done
  • If you are sending out emails, you upload a picture, write a couple lines about why you are hiking, and pick your goal amount
  • You choose to have the site send out emails for you, or to manually send out three pre-written emails
  • You go on a beautiful hike, have a delicious lunch, hang out with other awesome hikers, and raise money for a great cause
Easy as pie. Easy like Sunday morning.

How do I get there?

Click here for a map and directions to Quarry Parking Lot. If you can't get there on your own, we may be able to provide transportation! ATC will happily provide shuttles for our hikers who sign up by June 30. Email us at and tell us that you're in need of a ride.

What are some of the best things about this hike?

  • There’s no minimum fundraising requirement. You send out three emails and try your best.
  • The registration fee is cheap ($20 for adults, and kids under 18 are free). It’s the same price as a movie and popcorn, two drinks at a hip bar, or a main course at many SF restaurants. However, we’ll waive the registration fee if it’s a problem!
  • You can still join in, even if the full eight-mile hike isn’t for you! We have a three-mile loop for anyone who wants to do a shorter hike.
  • There will be guided hikes, led by ATC staff and board members, throughout the morning. It’ll give you a chance to get to know the ATC community a little better. More details to come after you sign up!
  • We’ll get you to Mt. Tam even if you don’t have a car.
  • You’re done by three, and you’ll have the rest of the day to yourself.
  • Have you been to Mt. Tam? It’s gorgeous.

Why should I do it?

Here are FIVE reasons:

  1. You'll get outdoors, get tan, get fit, and experience some serious natural beauty.
  2. You'll have a ton of fun with our other hikers and the ATC community.
  3. You'll work off all the hot dogs (or veggie dogs) you've been eating this summer.
  4. You'll get a delicious picnic on the mountain when you have finished your hike.
  5. All of the money you raise will go to help homeless youth and young adults in San Francisco, so you can feel good inside and out.

Why shouldn't I do it?

  1. You hate the outdoors, sunlight, and fun.
